Will NHL combine affect who Flyers pick at No. 2?

Flyers general manager Ron Hextall was up in Buffalo earlier this week with his amateur scouts and assistant GM and scouting director Chris Pryor for the combine, a collection of 104 prospects available for selection later this month in Chicago.

The Flyers interviewed more than 70 of them, including both of the presumed top two picks, Nico Hischier and Nolan Patrick.

Now back at the teams home base at the Skate Zone in Voorhees, Hextall and the scouts are meeting about what theyll do with their 11 picks, including No. 2 overall, and the combine doesnt factor in much.

Its not gonna make or break you, Hextall said on a conference call with reporters Friday. It just kind of cements what you think. Our amateur scouts, who already know the kids, it gives them a chance to ask the similar questions that theyve asked during the year, clean anything up in terms of injuries or any other issues they had going on. It gives the rest of us a chance to listen and get a feel for a young player. By no means does it necessarily change your mind on a player.

Its more than just interviews. The players will undergo testing as well " a process which started Friday " and the Flyers put even less stock in that. Their scouts have watched most of these players more than once so the book on them is based more on that than a bench press or pull-up.

In the 2014 combine Sam Bennett couldnt do one pull-up. The Calgary Flames still selected him fourth overall that year.
